Is the trouble between you, or somewhere else?

My whole practice sits in one place: sex, intimacy, and what goes on between two people. If what’s weighing on you lives outside that — depression, anxiety, work, something from a long way back — then you want a therapist who works there. Not me stretching to cover it.

You may already be sure which of you is the problem.

Most people who write to me have decided that before they get in touch. The one who doesn’t want sex. The one who’s in pain. The one whose body won’t cooperate on cue. Sometimes the other partner doesn’t yet know the message was sent at all.

So I should say plainly what I do and don’t take on: this practice is couples. Two of you, both there. Not because I’d rather have company, but because what happens in bed and what happens the rest of the week run on the same wiring. Whatever sits unresolved between you turns up sexually, and the sexual difficulty then goes on shaping how you treat each other at breakfast. Pull one thread out and work it on its own and it tends not to hold.

There’s something else that changes when you both come: you stop working from two different accounts of what’s been happening.

If your partner is reluctant, or you haven’t asked them yet, say so rather than quietly booking alone — a concrete appointment sometimes lands differently from a general idea. But if what you want is therapy for yourself, that’s not what I offer. The next screen has the directories I’d send you to.
